To avoid unwanted pain, take the following items into consideration.
When sitting, choose a chair that is firm enough to support you comfortably. Pain in upper back can be caused by slouching, so don't slouch, and sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a low footstool so your knees are slightly higher than your hips.
When standing, stand with your head level. When standing in one place for a long time, put one foot on a 4-6 inch stool to keep pressure off your spine. Abstain from wearing high heels when standing for extended periods.
When working at a desk, take stretch breaks often, and sit with your knees at a 90-120 degree angle. Make sure your chair fits correctly, and choose a chair that tilts back so you can rest while you are reading the computer screen. Allow for 2 inches between the front edge of your seat and the back of your knees. Elevate materials on your computer screen to avoid neck fatigue.
